I have been a chiropractor for 18 years, and I have lost count of the patients who walked in with morning low-back pain and walked out with a mattress recommendation instead of an adjustment. When I compare memory foam and hybrid mattresses, I am not hunting for the softest bed or the most impressive spec sheet. I am hunting for the one that holds a spine in neutral for eight hours a night, for the next seven years. That is a structural question, not a comfort question, and it is the one most buying advice skips.

This comparison covers four mattresses on my bench in 2026: two all-foam builds and two hybrids, in queen and full sizes, from an entry-level foam bed up to a hybrid that costs real money. Every one of them is a legitimate purchase. They are just built for different sleepers, and picking the wrong one is how people end up replacing a mattress in year two.

The short answer: if you sleep on your side and run warm, the Sweetnight CoolNest 14 Inch is the foam mattress I would start with. If you sleep on your back or stomach and want a genuinely firm, supportive feel, the DreamCloud Classic 12 Inch hybrid is the better match. If budget is the whole conversation, the EGOHOME 8 Inch is the honest cheap option, and the 12 Inch pocket-spring hybrid is what I would choose for two people sharing a full bed.

What I check before a mattress earns a recommendation

Four things, every time, and none of them is the label on the box.

The pressure map. I put a sensor pad on the mattress and lie on it in every position I sleep in, because the map shows where weight actually concentrates: heels, hips, shoulders, rib cage. A mattress that pushes your hips up while your shoulders sink is a mattress that will have you rotating your pelvis all night and waking up stiff. You can run a crude version of this test yourself. Lie on your side and have someone look at your spine from behind. Ears, shoulders, and hips should stack in a line. If your waist sags toward the bed, the mattress is too soft for your frame. If there is daylight under your waist, it is too firm, and your lumbar muscles will spend the night trying to bridge the gap.

Foam density. Density, not thickness, predicts how long a foam mattress keeps its shape. Two mattresses can both say "memory foam" and behave completely differently in year three, because one uses a denser support core. This is the spec brands bury and marketing copy avoids.

Edge support. Sit on the edge of the bed. Then sit there for a full minute. You get dressed on the edge, you put shoes on the edge, you sit down to take a call on the edge. A foam mattress with a soft perimeter collapses under you, and once the edge is gone the usable sleeping surface shrinks.

Motion transfer. If you share a bed, this is the partner test. Movement should stay on the side it started on. Memory foam deadens motion well. Pocket coils do it better than people expect when each spring is individually wrapped.

Sweetnight CoolNest Queen Mattress, 14 Inch Cooling Memory Foam

Fourteen inches is a lot of mattress, and for a side sleeper that depth is the point. A thick comfort layer lets your shoulder and hip sink far enough to keep your spine straight without bottoming out on the support core underneath. Side sleepers are the group most likely to feel a thin mattress in their shoulder by 3 a.m., and this build is aimed squarely at them. It is a queen, which is the size most couples and most adults should buy if the room allows it, and the price lands where a lot of 10-inch queens sit.

Where I would push back: a 14-inch all-foam mattress has no coil unit to firm up the perimeter, so edge support is the first thing I would verify in person. And "cooling" on a memory foam mattress deserves scrutiny. Memory foam sleeps warm because it hugs you, and a cooling layer has to move heat somewhere to matter. More on that below.

DreamCloud Classic 12" Queen Mattress, Hybrid Memory Foam, Firm Feel

This is the mattress in the group I would hand to a back sleeper or a stomach sleeper, and to anyone who has ever described a bed as "too squishy." A hybrid pairs a coil support unit with memory foam on top, which gives you the pressure relief of foam over a base that pushes back. For a back sleeper, that push-back is what keeps the lumbar spine from flattening into the bed. For a stomach sleeper, it is what keeps the hips from dropping and hyperextending the low back.

The honest caveat is the word "firm." Firmness is the least standardized term in this industry, and one brand's firm is another brand's medium. I have put a pressure map on mattresses labeled firm that measured closer to medium, and the reverse. Treat this listing's firmness as a starting point, not a measurement, and use the trial period to confirm it against your own frame. It is also the most expensive of the four, which is what hybrid construction costs.

EGOHOME Full Size Mattress, 8 Inch Medium Firm, Green Tea Memory Foam

Every comparison needs a genuinely affordable option, and this is it. An 8-inch full-size foam mattress at the lowest price in this group is a real answer for a guest room, a teenager's first apartment, or a small bedroom where a queen will not fit. The green tea infusion is a real thing in foam manufacturing and it is mostly about odor and freshness rather than sleep quality, but it is a reasonable addition at this price.

My concern is structural and it is the same concern I have with every thin foam mattress: 8 inches does not leave much room for a dense support core once you account for the comfort layers, and a shallow core is where sagging shows up first. That does not make it a bad mattress. It makes it a mattress for a lighter sleeper, a guest room that gets used a few nights a month, or a body that is not carrying a lot of weight into the foam every night. If this is your primary bed and you are a heavier sleeper, I would rather you spend more now than replace it in two years.

12 Inch Full Mattress, Hybrid with Motion-Isolating Pocket Springs

Pocket springs are the quiet hero of shared beds. Each spring is wrapped individually, so it compresses on its own instead of dragging its neighbors with it. That is motion isolation, and it is the reason a hybrid can outperform a solid slab of foam for couples. Add 12 inches of total height, which leaves room for a legitimate support core and a comfort layer above it, and you have a full-size hybrid that makes sense for two people in a smaller bedroom or a guest room that occasionally hosts a couple.

What I cannot verify from the listing is foam density above the coil unit, and that is the number that decides whether this mattress is still supportive in year five or has developed a body-shaped dip in the middle. It is the same open question I would ask about any hybrid at this price. If you buy it, rotate it on schedule, keep it on a solid foundation, and treat the trial period as a real test rather than a formality.

Cooling claims, honestly

A gel layer is not air conditioning. I say this as someone who owns a gel-infused mattress and likes it. What actually determines whether you sleep hot is airflow through the mattress and what is on top of it. Memory foam hugs your body, which reduces airflow and traps heat, and no phase-change panel changes that physics. Hybrids breathe better because air moves through the coil unit. If you sleep hot, a hybrid has a structural advantage over an all-foam bed, and the sheet you put on top of either one matters as much as the mattress itself. Breathable cotton beats a microfiber blend every time.

Firmness labels are not measurements

Every brand's medium is different, and "medium firm" is the most abused phrase in the category. It can mean anything from a supportive bed for a back sleeper to a brick that leaves a side sleeper's arm numb. I test with a pressure map, not a label, and so should you. If you cannot lie on the mattress before buying, buy from a seller with a real return window and spend the first two weeks paying attention to how you feel at 6 a.m., not how the bed feels at 6 p.m.

The two tests people skip

Sit on the edge and stay there for a minute. If you sink more than an inch or two, the usable surface of that mattress is smaller than the size label suggests.

Then run the partner test. Lie down, have someone roll over next to you, and notice whether you feel it in your shoulders. Memory foam handles this well. Individually wrapped pocket coils handle it better than most people expect. A cheap continuous-coil bed does not handle it at all.

Which one I would pick for which sleeper

What I tell patients before they buy

A mattress is a seven to ten year purchase, so the cheapest one that sags in year two was never cheap. Buy from a seller with a real return policy, give it a full 30 nights before you decide, and put it on a foundation that does not flex. Then check your spine alignment in the morning, not your mood at night. If you wake up with a stiff low back more mornings than not after a month, the mattress is telling you something, and no topper is going to fix a support core that is wrong for your body.
